The Zimbabwe Cricket family has been saddened by the passing on of Ian David Robinson. Ian succumbed to lung cancer and died on Sunday 3 April 2016 at the age of 69.
Ian began his umpiring career in 1975 and was appointed to the first class panel in 1978. He made his international debut as an umpire in the 1992 World Cup and his Test debut was in Zimbabwe’s inaugural test match against India during the same year. In 1994, Ian was appointed to the ICC’s International Cricket panel. He officiated in 28 Tests, 90 ODIs and 3 World Cups (1992, 1996 and 1999).
Ian retired from top level umpiring in 2008 and took up a role as ICC Regional Umpires’ Performance Manager, Africa Region. After retiring from active umpiring, Ian was appointed as Zimbabwe Cricket Training and Performance Manager for Umpires, Scorers and Match Referees, a position he held until April 2015.
Ian also served as a Zimbabwe Cricket Union board member for 14 years.
