Zimbabwe beat Uganda to make it two in row

Uganda Women – 71 for 8 in 20 overs (Mary Nalule 22, Hamu Bagenda 14; Tasmeen Granger 3/11, Precious Marange 3/13, Chipo Mugeri 2/13)

Zimbabwe Women – 72 for 4 in 12.4 overs (Sharne Mayers 19*, Modester Mupachikwa 19; Stephanie Nampiima 2/23, Franklyn Najjumba 1/9)

Zimbabwe Women won by six wickets.

Zimbabwe maintained their perfect start to the 2016 ICC Women’s World Twenty 20 Africa Qualifier tournament with their second win in as many matches after beating Uganda by six wickets at Harare’s Alexandra Sports Club on Saturday afternoon.

Sharne Mayers smashed an unbeaten 19 off 12 balls to help the hosts chase down the target of 72 in 12.4 overs.

Opener Modester Mupachikwa scored 19 too and, although her effort came off 29 balls, the knock was important in stabilising the innings that had been shaken by the early loss of Precious Marange for six runs and captain Chipo Mugeri for one.

Ashley Ndiraya contributed five with the bat, while Mary-Anne Musonda finished unbeaten on nine.

Stephanie Nampiima was the pick of the Uganda bowlers with two wickets for 23 runs in 3.4 overs.

After being put in to bat first, Uganda threatened to run away with the game with a promising first-wicket partnership of 36 runs shared by Mary Nalule and Hamu Bagenda.

But the fall of Nalule (22) and Bagenda (14) signalled the onset of a collapse of some sort as the Ugandans lost their next four wickets for five runs.

Tasmeen Granger and Precious Marange were the chief destroyers with three wickets apiece, while Mugeri weighed in with two scalps of her own.

In their first match played in the morning at the same venue, Zimbabwe walloped Tanzania by nine wickets.

Meanwhile, Kenya also made it two out of two with a 58-run victory over Tanzania, having beaten Uganda by 13 runs in the earlier match at the Country Club.

The round-robin continues tomorrow.
