Kaia, Bawa hit centuries as Takashinga end Uprising’s unbeaten run

Takashinga Patriots 1 – 313-5 in 45 overs (Innocent Kaia 112, Emmanuel Bawa 103, Chamu Chibhabha 45; Victor Nyauchi 2/77, Brian Bennett 1/47, Takunda Manyama 1/61)

Uprising – 239-7 in 45 overs (Tafadzwa Mahachi 115, Aisha Chibanda 41, Takunda Manyama 29; Richard Ngarava 2/28, Tapiwa Mufudza 2/45, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe 1/21)

Takashinga Patriots 1 won by 74 runs

Fine centuries from Emmanuel Bawa and Innocent Kaia on their home ground paved the way for Takashinga Patriots to end Uprising’s proud seven-match winning record in the National Premier League (NPL) with a victory by 74 runs on Saturday.

Uprising decided to bowl first and struck immediately when Victor Nyauchi had Tinashe Kamunhukamwe caught off his fourth delivery without scoring.

But this was their last success for 31 overs, as Bawa and Kaia flayed the bowling to the tune of 184 runs in their second-wicket partnership that put Takashinga right on top.

Bawa had most of the bowling and he scored 103 off 110 balls, with three sixes and 10 fours, while Kaia scored 112 off 106, with 11 fours to his credit.

With some powerful hitting by Timycen Maruma (34 off 21) and Chamu Chibhabha (45 off 27), Takashinga were able to finish on 313 for five wickets after 45 overs, setting Uprising a daunting target.

In such a big score, the bowling of Dylan Hondo was remarkable, as he bowled his nine overs without taking a wicket, but with only 24 runs scored off him.

Uprising needed to score quickly right from the start, but soon lost three wickets for 33 runs, two of them to Richard Ngarava.

Their opening batter, Tafadzwa Mahachi, fought a superb fight, scoring the third century of the match, 115 off 129 balls, but Uprising fell steadily behind the required run rate, and in the end had to concede defeat for the first time in this tournament.

Ngarava did best of the Takashinga bowlers with his two wickets for 28 off seven overs.

 *******************************************************

Rainbow – 311 all out in 44.5 overs (Tino Chiwara 62, Muhammad Zaheer Tufail 43, Robert Chiminya 30; Charlton Tshuma 3/46, Brandon James 2/49, Thamsanqa Nunu 2/54)

Bulawayo Athletic Club – 275-7 in 45 overs (Brandon James 88, Gift Mavhaire 55, Vitalis Buwu 50; Carlton Takawira 3/54, Daniel Jakiel 3/56, Ronak Patel 1/53)

Rainbow won by 36 runs

A second-wicket stand of 123 between Tino Chiwara, who scored 62, and Muhammad Zaheer Tufail, with 43, set Rainbow up for a 36-run victory over Bulawayo Athletic Club in their NPL match at Kwekwe Sports Club on Saturday.

Put in to bat, Rainbow lost Matthew Campbell in the first over, but then came that excellent partnership which took only 16 overs and put them in a strong position.

It was a fine team effort, as after these two left, six of the next seven batters all passed 20, and were finally dismissed for 311 with just one ball left unbowled.

Charlton Tshuma was the most successful bowler with three wickets for 46 in 6.5 overs.

BAC lost one wicket and one batter retired hurt for 11 runs on the board, but they fought back with great spirit.

Vitalis Buwu (50) and Saxon Pettican (35) took the score to 94 before they were parted, and there followed an excellent stand worth 113 for the fourth wicket between Gift Mavhaire with 55 and Brandon James, 88.

As long as they were still there, BAC still had hope of a remarkable victory, but when they were separated with the score at 212 the required run rate was about 12 an over, which was much too great.

They had to settle for a score of 275 for seven wickets and an honourable defeat.

Daniel Jakiel and Calton Takawira shared the bowling honours with three wickets each.

Gladiators, Takashinga stroll home as Mbizo, Bulls remain winless

Mbizo – 72 all out in 18.2 overs (Ronald Masocha 22, Mkululi Nyathi 15, Walter Matawu 12; Malcom Chikuhwa 5/22, Milton Shumba 2/9, Phrase Mukabeta 2/25)

Gladiators – 73-3 in 12.1 overs (Lennox Chando 30, Milton Shumba 21*, Ashley Mufandauya 15*; Jabulisa Tshuma 2/34, Manson Chikowero 1/18)

Gladiators won by seven wickets

Malcom Chikuhwa shattered the Mbizo batting with a five-wicket haul to give Gladiators an easy seven-wicket victory to preserve their National Premier League (NPL) winning record at Kwekwe Sports Club on Thursday.

Mbizo decided to bat and made a promising start, as Mkululi Nyathi (13) and Walter Matawu (12) put on 31 for the first wicket.

Then the batting collapsed, with only Ronald Masocha with 22 from number eight able to make any stand after that.

Chikuhwa took five of the wickets for 22 runs in eight overs.

Jabulisa Tshuma made sure Gladiators did not have everything their own way as he dismissed Wessly Madhevere for one and Tony Munyonga for three with 10 runs on the board as they chased their target.

However, Lennox Chando made 30, and then Milton Shumba (21 not out) and Ashley Mufandauya (15 not out) brought the match to a rapid conclusion by making the last 25 together in three overs.

*****************************************************

Golden Bulls – 125 all out in 35.5 overs (Jimmy Nyangoni 45, Samuel Muyambo 19, Kumbirai Machaka 12; Wallace Mubayiwa 3/21, Keith Jaure 3/27, Ryan Simbi 2/20)

Takashinga Patriots 2 – 129-2 in 23.1 overs (Aliakbar Hamid 57*, Baxon Gopito 49, Alvin Chiradza 6; Munashe Maworere 2/26)

Takashinga Patriots 2 won by eight wickets

A steady innings of 57 not out off 67 balls by Takashinga Patriots 2 opening batter Aliakbar Hamid steered his team to a straightforward victory over Golden Bulls by eight wickets in their NPL meeting at Masvingo Sports Club on Thursday.

Golden Bulls, put in to bat, made a disastrous start, losing their top three batters with only four runs on the board, two of them to Keith Jaure.

Jimmy Nyangoni led the fightback with 45 off 68 balls, but no other batter reached 20 and Bulls were eventually dismissed for 125 in their 36th over.

Jaure and Wallace Mubayiwa both took three wickets, for 27 and 21 runs respectively.

Baxon Gopito gave Takashinga a rollicking start in pursuit of their target, scoring 49 off 43 balls out of an opening partnership of 78 with Hameed.

After that Hamid took over the role of aggressor and propelled Takashinga home for the loss of only one more wicket.

Munashe Maworere was the only bowler to give the batters any trouble, and he took both the wickets that fell for 26 runs in 7.1 overs.

The day’s losing teams, Bulls and Mbizo, remain locked together at the bottom of the table, having yet to record their first victory of a very difficult first season for them both in the country’s top club competition.

Uprising still unbeaten, Takashinga march on as Mutare clinch derby

Scorpions – 238-9 in 45 overs (Jayden Schadendorf 87, Blessed Muzite 72, Nkosilathi Nungu 14; Courage Gwarada 3/45, Luke Jongwe 2/20, Kirby Madaramete 2/51)

Uprising – 242-5 in 38.5 overs (Tariro Makauyo 74, Brian Bennett 65*, Gilford Muzeya 45; Praise Makaza 2/43, Jayden Schadendorf 1/26, Costa Zhou 1/29)

Uprising won by five wickets

Scorpions made a superb challenge to break Uprising’s winning record in the National Premier League (NPL) at Takashinga Cricket Club on Wednesday, only for Tariro Makauyo to lead a strong reply that resulted in another victory, this one by five wickets.

After deciding to bat, Scorpions were on to a good thing when Jayden Schadendorf and Blessed Muzite put on an excellent second-wicket partnership of 162 in 33 overs.

Schadendorf was the faster scorer, although getting less of the bowling, making 87 off 99 balls, while Muzite took 113 balls for his 72.

Ten overs remained when he was out at 177 for two, but there was nobody in the middle order to take advantage of their excellent position, and wickets fell quickly as the innings declined, the eventual total being 238 for nine wickets, three vital ones in the middle order going to Courage Gwarada.

This gave Uprising a lifeline, and Makauyo gave them the ideal start, getting stuck into the bowlers for a rousing innings of 74 off only 44 balls, with a six and 13 fours.

He was out at 100 for two in only the 14th over, and there followed a fourth-wicket partnership of 74 in 13 overs between Brian Bennett and the captain, Gilford Muzeya.

Muzeya went for 45, but Bennett stayed to make 65 not out off 70 balls and finish the match in a flurry of boundaries, giving Uprising another fine victory with more than six overs to spare.

*********************************************************

Westside – 265-9 in 45 overs (Definate Mawadzi 129, Prosper Mugeri 72*, Tafadzwa Ngulube 14; John Masara 2/31, Tendai Chatara 2/35, Tatenda Mupunga 2/43)

Mutare Sports Club – 268-7 in 43.3 overs (Donald Tiripano 103*, Clive Chitumba 44, Kudzai Sauramba 40; Vincent Masekesa 3/72, Frank Mazviita 2/41, Fortune Mhlanga 1/31)

Mutare Sports Club won by three wickets

The Eastern Highlands derby turned out to be the most exciting match of the day as Definate Mawadzi and Donald Tiripano both scored centuries, with the latter seeing hosts Mutare Sports Club through to a tight three-wicket victory over Westside with nine balls to spare.

Westside decided to bat, and they owed everything to Mawadzi, who opened the innings and lost one partner after another until seven wickets were down for only 102 runs.

Then he finally found a worthy partner in Prosper Mugeri, and the pair added 133 together for the eighth wicket, enabling their team to reach the fine score of 265 for nine wickets.

Mawadzi made 129 off 133 balls, with two sixes and 15 fours, while Mugeri’s 72 not out took 57 balls (two sixes, seven fours).

Tendai Chatara with two wickets for 35 off his nine overs was the best of the bowlers.

Clive Chitumba (44) and Kudzai Sauramba (40) gave Mutare quite a good start.

Tiripano came in at 78 for three and played a fine attacking innings, his sixth-wicket partnership of 93 in 15 overs with John Musara (35) deciding the match in Mutare’s favour.

Tiripano reached 99 and then hit another fine four, his 11th, to bring up his magnificent century and his side’s victory at the same time.

*********************************************************

Kadoma – 152 all out in 36.5 overs (Takudzwanashe Kaitano 42, Terrence Makoroma 34, Bright Matsiwe 21; Mathew Campbell 7/24, Carlton Takawira 1/17, Ronak Patel 1/19)

Rainbow – 154-6 in 23.2 overs (Robert Chiminya 43*, Ronak Patel 33, Muhammad Zaheer Tufail 24; Kudakwashe Macheka 4/36, Tashinga Musekiwa 2/42)

Rainbow won by four wickets

Matthew Campbell produced a remarkable bowling performance by taking seven cheap wickets against Kadoma at Old Hararians Sports Club on Wednesday, enabling Rainbow to clinch victory by four wickets.

Kadoma, put in to bat, made a good start, reaching 112 with only two wickets down and Takudzwanashe Kaitano scoring 42.

Then Campbell came on to bowl as the third change, and wickets started to tumble as he took seven of the next eight to fall.

Kadoma were all out for 152, with Campbell taking his seven wickets in only 6.5 overs for just 24 runs.

Rainbow struggled as they chased the target, though, and lost their first six wickets for only 97 on the board, with Kudakwashe Macheka taking four wickets.

They were saved by Robert Chiminya, who attacked the bowling powerfully to hit five sixes in scoring 43 not out, well supported by Robertson Chinyengetere who made 12 not out as their unbroken partnership of 57 clinched the victory.

*********************************************************

Bulawayo Athletic Club – 69 all out in 23.4 overs ( Palvin Ndlovu 21, Saxon Pettican 9, Vitalis Buwu 8; Arnold Shara 3/12, Tawanda Maposa 3/27, Ernest Masuku 2/4)

Amakhosi – 73-2 in 17.1 overs (Farai Gunda 27*, Bright Phiri 20, Simbarashe Haukozi 13*; Thamsanqa Nunu 1/9, Charlton Tshuma 1/16)

Amakhosi won by eight wickets

Arnold Shara’s opening spell at Bulawayo Athletic Club plunged the home side into a crisis from which they never recovered, handing Amakhosi an eight-wicket victory.

BAC lost their first five wickets in seven overs for only 11 runs, and Shara took three of them, his eventual figures being three for 12 in five overs.

Only Palvin Ndlovu with 21 could reach double figures as BAC collapsed to 69 all out.

Amakhosi lost a quick wicket, but then Farai Gunda (27 not out) and Bright Phiri (20) put on 56 together to ensure victory.

*********************************************************

Queens Sports Club – 149-6 in 45 overs (Ian Fuzane 36, Tanatswa Bechani 32*, Chris Mpofu 24; Tapiwa Mufudza 2/15, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe 1/20, Roy Kaia 1/27)

Takashinga Patriots 1 – 151-4 in 21.5 overs (Innocent Kaia 80*, Roy Kaia 23*, Chamu Chibhabha 23; Vusi Kasipani 2/26, Chris Mpofu 1/29, Tanatswa Bechani 1/31)

Takashinga Patriots 1 won by six wickets

A fine innings of 80 not out by Innocent Kaia saw Takashinga Patriots 1 cruise to an easy six-wicket victory over Queens Sports Club in their NPL match played at Kwekwe Sports Club on Wednesday.

The Queens batting tactics on being put in to bat were hard to understand, as at the top of the order Dalu Mboyi took 46 balls to score 22 and Ian Fuzane 81 balls in making 36, so when the latter was out in the 31st over the score was only 89 for three.

The later batters were unable to make up for this, although Tanatswa Bechani played the most aggressive innings of 32 not out off 37 balls, and the eventual total off 45 overs was only 149 for six wickets.

Tapiwa Mufudza had the remarkable bowling figures of two wickets for only 15 runs off nine overs.

Chris Mpofu trapped Emmanuel Bawa lbw with the first ball of the Takashinga innings, but this brought in Kaia, who immediately showed Queens how to bat.

He went for his strokes right from the start, scoring 80 off only 64 balls with two sixes and nine fours, and victory was achieved off only 21.5 overs.

Gladiators glide on, Bechani’s seven-wicket haul inspires Queens

Gladiators – 282-5 in 45 overs (Milton Shumba 75*, Tony Munyonga 74, Clive Madande 56; Brandon James 2/47, Jeffrey Mhuriyengwe 2/69, Palvin Ndlovu 1/39)

Bulawayo Athletic Club – 105 all out in 29.1 overs (Tafara Mupariwa 35, Flemming Nkomo 26, Jeffrey Mhuriyengwe 11; Owen Muzondo 2/13, Munashe Zata 2/13, Malcom Chikuhwa 2/15)

Gladiators won by 177 runs

An excellent all-round batting performance headed by Tony Munyonga and Milton Shumba paved the way for Gladiators to continue their National Premier League run of victories by the large margin of 177 runs against Bulawayo Athletic Club at Kwekwe Sports Club on Sunday.

Deciding to bat, they lost Wessly Madhevere for one, but their middle order came through strongly, with Munyonga leading the way with a well-hit 74 off 56 balls.

His innings was followed by a fifth-wicket partnership of 111 in less than 19 overs between Shumba and Clive Madande, who both coincidentally scored exactly as many runs as the number of balls they faced.

Madande made 56 and Shumba 75 not out, the eventual total being 282 for five wickets.

They then bundled out Bulawayo Athletic Club for 105 within 30 overs, Tafara Mupariwa being the top scorer with 35, while five bowlers took two wickets each.

***********************************************************

Mbizo – 207-6 in 45 overs (Clifford Takaedza 36, Hammad Ul Hassan Aqil 30, Walter Matawu 29; Tapiwa Mufudza 2/20, Priviledge Chesa 1/32, Munashe Chipara 1/39)

Takashinga Patriots 1 – 208-2 in 23 overs (Timycen Maruma 85*, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe 76, Innocent Kaia 30*; Jabulisa Tshuma 2/60)

Takashinga Patriots 1 won by eights wickets

Aggressive fifties from Timycen Maruma and Tinashe Kamunhukamwe swept Takashinga Patriots 1 to an eight-wicket victory on their home ground over Mbizo.

Mbizo did well with the bat to score 207 for six wickets.

Remarkably, their top seven batters all passed 20, and yet not one of them was able to reach 40, or they would have been able to set Takashinga a harder task.

Their opener Clifford Takaedza was the top scorer with 36 before he was run out.

Tapiwa Mufudza was the best of the bowlers, bowling his nine overs for only 20 runs and two wickets.

Takashinga lost an early wicket, but Kamunhukamwe flayed the bowling with such ferocity that he scored 76 off only 26 balls, with six sixes and eight fours.

He was out at 86 for two, only for Maruma to take over his mantle and hit his way to victory with 85 not out off 52 balls, including five sixes and nine fours.

***********************************************************

Queens – 183 all out in 43.5 overs (Chris Mpofu 44, Dalu Mboyi 40, Tinaye Shayamano 30; Nyasha Dube 4/29, Blessed Muzite 2/32, Nkosilathi Nungu 2/41)

Scorpions – 78 all out in 25.2 overs (Blessed Muzite 27, Costa Zhou 16, Gabriel Jaya 13; Tanatswa Bechani 7/13, Isheunopa Musekwa 3/22)

Queens won by 105 runs

A remarkable seven-wicket haul by Tanatswa Bechani made sure of a Queens victory by 105 runs over Scorpions at their home ground in Bulawayo.

Runs were not easy for either team to come by, and Queens, put in to bat, made a score of only 183, their top scorers being Dalu Mboyi with 40 and Chris Mpofu, who followed his recent batting approach by taking 90 balls to score 44.

Nyasha Dube was the most successful bowler with four wickets for 29 runs.

Scorpions made a good start to their run chase, with Blessed Muzite (27) and Gabriel Jaya (13) making 40 together for the first wicket.

Then Muzite gave Bechani a return catch, enabling him to start a tsunami of havoc among the middle order.

Only Costa Zhou with 16 could withstand the off-spinner for long, and when he took the final wicket Scorpions were all out for 78 and Bechani had a personal haul of seven for only 13 runs in 7.2 overs.

***********************************************************

Westside – 304-8 in 45 overs (Tinashe Chiorah 105*, Kevin Kasuza 77, Prosper Mugeri 29; Rodney Mupfudza 2/34, Ryan Simbi 2/38, Keith Jaure 2/60)

Takashinga Patriots 2 – 6-0 in 1 over (Aliakbar Hamid 5*, Baxon Gopito 1*)

Match abandoned (bad light)

Sympathy must be felt for Westside, who at Mutare Sports Club amassed the fine total of 304 for eight wickets, including a century from Tinashe Chiorah, only to have the match abandoned due to bad light just after Takashinga Patriots 2 started their reply.

Westside lost two early wickets and Chiorah retired hurt, before Kevin Kasuza rallied his team with a fine innings of 77 off 61 balls.

Chiorah later returned and went on to score a brilliant 105, being still unbeaten when the innings closed, off 83 balls with a six and 12 fours.

Westside finished with the total of 304 for eight wickets after their 45 overs.

Ryan Simbi was the best of their bowlers, bowling his nine overs for 38 runs and two wickets.

Takashinga had a difficult task ahead of them, but after only one over for six runs the light deteriorated and the match was eventually abandoned without further play.

A superb opening partnership of 154 in less than 22 overs gave Rainbow a flying start in their National Premier League (NPL) match against Golden Bulls at Kwekwe Sports Club on Saturday, and ultimately led to a victory by 62 runs.

The losing team had its own hero in Shane Chigumbura, who not only took a hat-trick for Bulls but also scored a century in a losing cause.

Mathew Campbell scored 90 off the same number of deliveries, while Mohammad Zaheer Tufail was even more aggressive, taking only 58 balls to make 76, with a six and 11 fours.

After such a partnership, the following batters were perhaps a little too eager to emulate them in fast scoring, and the score went from 239 for three to 275 all out, as Chigumbura began the collapse with his hat-trick, all caught in the field.

Bulls had a difficult task, but Chigumbura opened the innings and scored his superb century, 115 off 114 balls, with three sixes and 14 fours.

His best partnership was one of 85 with Tendai Tapera (30), but they were unable to maintain the required run rate, and Daniel Jakiel finished the innings at 213 by taking three wickets in four balls.

Uprising – 276-9 in 45 overs (Ryan Kamwemba 64, Tariro Makauyo 57, Tadiwanashe Marumani 29; Donald Tiripano 4/30, Kudakwashe Ncumani 2/62, Patrick Chinengundu 1/20)

Mutare Sports Club – 230-7 in 45 overs (Spencer Magodo 81*, Nigel Bonyongwe 36, Patrick Chinengundu 28*; Tadiwanashe Marumani 1/5, Courage Gwarada 1/32, George Matanga 1/38)

Uprising won by 46 runs

A powerful innings of 64 off 46 balls by wicket-keeper Ryan Kamwemba was the main feature of Uprising’s 46-run victory over Mutare Sports Club in their NPL game on the latter’s ground on Saturday.

Put in to bat, Uprising were given a sound start by Tariro Makauyo with 57 off 70 balls, to be followed by Kamwemba’s innings, which contained five sixes and three fours.

In fact, nine batters in the innings reached double figures in a total of 276 for nine after 45 overs.

Donald Tiripano was the best of the bowlers, taking four wickets for 30 runs.

Mutare made a good fight, especially Spencer Magodo, who scored 81 not out off 91 balls, but after the second wicket went down for 70 in the 12th over they were unable to maintain the required run rate.

They steadily fell behind the clock and finished with 230 for seven wickets after their 45 overs.

Kadoma – 30-3 in 4.1 overs (Terrence Makoroma 16, Bright Matsiwe 5, Nyasha Mayavo 1; Tinotenda Maposa 2/9, Ernest Masuku 1/20)

Amakhosi –

Match abandoned (Kadoma forfeited)

There was an unfortunate scene at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Saturday when Kadoma forfeited their NPL match against Amakhosi.

Kadoma were put in to bat and were soon in trouble.

Two wickets fell in quick succession at 30, and the next man in, Brandon Mavuta, was caught unprepared.

He was too late to appear at the wicket and after he was given ‘timed out’, he allegedly refused to leave the field, eventually forcing the umpires to call off play and award the match to Amakhosi.

Disciplinary proceedings have since commenced.

Uprising remain unbeaten as Amakhosi finally register first win

Amakhosi – 252 all out in 41.3 overs (Bright Phiri 74, Tinashe Mujuru 32, Thabo Mboyi 26; Munashe Maworere 3/52, Jimmy Nyangoni 3/52, Elvin Nxumalo 2/26)

Golden Bulls – 104 all out in 22.3 overs (Kelvin Mabvute 42, Dereck Sadoki 26, Elvin Nxumalo 7; Tawanda Maposa 4/19, Thabo Mboyi 3/26, Mzingaye Mdlongwa 1/7)

Amakhosi won by 148 runs

A fine innings of 74 by Bright Phiri set Amakhosi on their way to their first victory of this National Premier League (NPL) campaign, by the handsome margin of 148 runs over Golden Bulls at Masvingo Sports Club on Sunday.

This match was played between two teams who had both lost all their previous fixtures in this competition, so the result was certain to bring joy and relief to one side.

Amakhosi made a bad start, losing three wickets for 39 runs, but then Phiri, batting at number four, began to change the game with his fine innings, which came off 73 balls and contained three sixes and seven fours.

He received a little help from the middle order, but a big score was still not assured when he was out at 159 for seven.

Then came a most welcome partnership of 54 for the eighth wicket between Tinashe Mujuru with 32 and Ashley Phiri with 24, and Thabo Mboyi with an aggressive 26 finally took the total to a healthy 252 all out.

The Golden Bulls innings was virtually a one-man show, that man being Kelvin Mabvute, who scored a gallant 42 before being second out at 52.

The next seven men scored a mere six runs among them to the bowling of Mboyi and Tawanda Maposa, and eight wickets were down for 57 before some courageous batting from Dereck Sadoki at least gave Bulls the consolation of passing 100.

Mboyi took three wickets for 36 runs and Maposa four for 19 as Amakhosi finally had something to celebrate.

*********************************************************

Uprising – 251 all out in 38.5 overs (Craig Ervine 95, Aisha Chibanda 36, Tariro Makauyo 34; Definate Mawadzi 3/60, Frank Mazviita 2/40, Fortune Mhlanga 1/27)

Westside – 235 all out in 41.5 overs (Kevin Kasuza 114, Tinashe Chiorah 40, Vincent Masekesa 22; Dylan Hondo 4/26, Ryan Burl 4/62, Courage Gwarada 1/30)

Uprising won by 16 runs

Two fine innings by Craig Ervine and Kevin Kasuza were the highlights of this match between two NPL pacesetters at Old Hararians Sports Club on Sunday, where Uprising eventually triumphed over Westside by 16 runs.

Ervine made a major impact for the first time in the tournament as he rose to the occasion with a fine 95 off 89 balls, with a six and 12 fours, as Uprising were put in to bat.

Tariro Makauyo with 34 and Aisha Chibanda with 36 were his main partners, but Westside did well to bowl their opponents out for 251 in only 38.5 overs, with Definate Mawadzi taking three wickets.

Tinashe Chiorah gave Westside a dashing start with 40 off 32 balls, while Kasuza came in at 54 for two and saw the fifth wicket fall at 80.

He found two valuable partners in Vincent Masekesa (22) and Prosper Mugeri in stands worth 61 and 63 respectively, and a close finish was in prospect when Ryan Burl struck a vital blow by taking a return catch to dismiss him at 226 for eight.

Kasuza had faced 117 balls and hit two sixes and 13 fours on his way to 114.

The last three men were unable to reach the target and the innings ended at 235.

Dylan Hondo did most of the early damage with four wickets for 26, while Burl wrapped up the tail with four for 62.

Takashinga Patriots 1 – 264 all out in 43.2 overs (Emmanuel Bawa 109, Chamu Chibhabha 60, Cunningham Ncube 19; Thamsanqa Nunu 4/58, Prince Kaunda 2/39, Jeffrey Mhuriyengwe 2/51)

Bulawayo Athletic Club – 178 all out in 39.2 overs (Tafara Mupariwa 50, Vitalis Buwu 26, Flemming Nkomo 19; Priviledge Chesa 4/47, Marshall Takodza 3/29, Tapiwa Mufudza 2/34)

Takashinga Patriots 1 won by 86 runs

A score of 109 by Emmanuel Bawa and a four-wicket haul for Priviledge Chesa were the main factors in Takashinga Patriots 1’s 86-run victory over Bulawayo Athletic Club in their NPL match at Kwekwe Sports Club on Sunday.

Bawa made Bulawayo Athletic Club (BAC) regret their decision to send Takashinga in to bat when he opened the innings and made his runs off 97 balls, with a six and 11 fours.

Chamu Chibhabha showed that he still has what it takes by scoring 60 off 53 balls (a six and seven fours), and the pair put on 110 for the third wicket in less than 17 overs.

The tail, hitting out for quick runs, did little and Thamsanqa Nunu picked up four easy wickets for 58 runs as Takashinga were dismissed for 264.

This was too hard a task for BAC, although they reached 109 before the fourth wicket fell, with the captain Tafara Mupariwa doing his best with 50 runs off 70 balls.

Chesa’s bowling accounted for the middle-order batters and he finished with four wickets for 47 runs.

*********************************************************

Rainbow – 241 all out in 44.3 overs (Gary Chirimuuta 63, Kudakwashe Munyede 55, Tino Chiwara 28; Keith Jaure 4/44, Wallace Mubaiwa 2/43, Takudzwa Chataira 2/55)

Takashinga Patriots 2 – 245-3 in 42.2 overs (Aliakbar Hamid 65, Baxon Gopito 50, Prince Masvaure 41*; Muhammad Zaheer Tufail 2/33, Taru Munashe 1/45)

Takashinga Patriots 2 won by seven wickets

There was another Takashinga victory at their home ground as the Patriots 2 team beat Rainbow by seven wickets, thanks largely to a century opening partnership between Baxon Gopito and Aliakbar Hamid.

Rainbow, put in to bat, lost their first three wickets to Keith Jaure and had five down for 79 before Kudakwashe Munyede joined Gary Chirimuuta at the crease.

They put on 114 together, with Chirimuuta making 63 off 70 balls and Munyede 55 off 67.

The rest of the team took the score to 241 before the last wicket fell to Jaure in the 45th over – his figures were four for 44.

Gopito and Hamid then made a strong reply for the home side as they scored 101 together in only 12.2 overs, Gopito then being dismissed for 50 off 41 balls.

Hamid continued until he had made 65 off 65 balls out of 159.

Prince Masvaure (41 not out) and Knowledge Kaia (39 not out) finished the match for Takashinga with ease, their steady unbroken partnership making 79 runs in 17 overs, having no cause to hurry as their top batters had given them plenty of time.

Gladiators pip Kadoma as Mbizo’s wait for first win continues

Kadoma – 242 all out in 44.2 overs (Nyasha Mayavo 93, Takudzwanashe Kaitano 61, Bright Matsiwe 29; Owen Muzondo 3/41, Cromen Zinyama 2/35, Munashe Zata 2/48)

Gladiators won by two wickets

The National Premier League (NPL) match of the day took place at Old Hararians Sports Club, where a drive for four by Tanatswa Chisvo took Gladiators to a thrilling two-wicket victory over Kadoma with just one ball to spare.

Kadoma’s strong batting brought them a score of 242 when they chose to go in, the highlights being the fine innings of 61 off 72 balls by Takudzwa Kaitano and 93 off 81 balls by Nyasha Mayavo.

After 40 overs Kadoma were 221 for six wickets, but their last four wickets fell quickly, and this proved costly in the end as they were dismissed for 242.

Gladiators made excellent progress with Lennox Chando (80 off 107 balls) and Ashley Mufandauya (56 off 56 balls) adding 107 for the third wicket to take the score to 164 for three in the 32nd over.

Then wickets began to fall, and the match was in the balance when the eighth wicket fell at 225 with only 10 balls remaining.

Then Chisvo rose to the occasion, scoring 13 not out off eight balls, well supported by Cromen Zinyama, 10 not out off five, and Gladiators secured a close and exciting win.

Queens Sports Club – 118 all out in 36.3 overs (Dalubuhle Mboyi 24, Jonathan Baloyi 14, Chris Mpofu 14; John Masara 4/21, Patrick Chinengundu 2/8, Silent Mujaji 2/26)

Mutare Sports Club – 119-4 in 22.5 overs (Kudzai Sauramba 32, Spencer Magodo 29*, Nigel Bonyongwe 28; Petros Sithole 2/23, Vusi Kasipani 2/30)

Mutare Sports Club won by six wickets

The bowling of Silent Mujaji and John Masara played the major part in Mutare Sports Club’s six-wicket victory over Queens Sports Club in their NPL clash at Masvingo Sports Club on Saturday.

Mutare decided to bowl first, and Mujaji made the vital initial breakthrough by taking two wickets in his second over to make the score 15 for two wickets.

Masara then got to work, bowling out four middle-order batters cheaply, with opener Dalu Mboyi the only man to pass 15 – he made 24, with the total 118.

Mujaji’s two vital wickets cost 26 runs, while Masara had four for 21.

Mutare lost Clive Chitumba for two, but Nigel Bonyongwe (28) and Kudzai Sauramba (32) put the innings on the right track, while Spencer Magodo (29 not out) took them home.

************************************************************

Scorpions – 227-9 in 45 overs (Blessed Muzite 62, Costa Zhou 49, Tariro Kapungu 33*; Shepherd Dube 3/56, Manson Chikowero 2/35, Lesley Chemudondo 1/21)

Mbizo – 143 all out in 38.1 overs (Manson Chikowero 26*, Tafara Chingwara 18, Mkululi Nyathi 17; Tawananyasha Kasondo 2/8, Costa Zhou 2/19, Nkosilathi Nungu 2/28)

Scorpions won by 84 runs

Blessed Muzite and Costa Zhou played fine innings for Scorpions as they secured a straightforward victory by 84 runs over Mbizo in their NPL game at Kwekwe Sports Club.

Scorpions chose to bat, and Muzite, opening the innings, made 62 off 91 balls to give his side a sound start.

When he was out Zhou hit a more aggressive 49 off 36 balls, and though few of the later batters came off, the total was a useful 227 for nine wickets.

Mbizo were never in the hunt, as wickets fell steadily and the eighth man was out at 94.

Manson Chikowero fought back to score 26 not out, and with Tafara Chingwara making 18 these two managed to take the final score to 143 to lessen the margin of defeat.

Gladiators upset Takashinga to maintain perfect start

Takashinga Patriots 2 – 189-6 in 45 overs (Aliakbar Hamid 61, Prince Masvaure 56, Knowledge Kaia 26; Owen Muzondo 1/22, Munashe Zata 1/26, Malcom Chikuhwa 1/28)

Gladiators – 190-5 in 41.4 overs (Ashley Mufandauya 72, Owen Muzondo 36, Malcom Chikuhwa 29*; Takudzwa Chataira 2/29, Keith Jaure 1/21, Daich Nyandoro 1/33)

Gladiators won by five wickets

A fine innings of 72 runs by Ashley Mufandauya enabled Gladiators to inflict a rare defeat on a Takashinga team on their own ground on Thursday, winning their National Premier League (NPL) match by five wickets.

Takashinga Patriots 2, put in to bat, struggled to score quickly enough against good bowling.

Their opening batter, Aliakbar Hamid, stayed in until the 32nd over to score 61 off 101 balls, while Prince Masvaure took 80 balls to score 56.

None of the other batters were able to dominate the bowling and after 45 overs there were only 189 runs on the board with six wickets down.

The most economical bowler was Owen Muzondo, who took one wicket for only 22 runs in his nine overs.

Gladiators did not make a good start, losing their first three wickets for 43 runs.

Then Mufandauya became the first batter in the match to master the bowling, and his 72 off 66 balls, helped by Muzondo (36) and Malcom Chikuhwa (29 not out), took Gladiators to a fine victory with 20 balls to spare.

************************************************************

Rainbow – 245-8 in 45 overs (Lavert Masunda 45, Daniel Jakiel 39*, Tino Chiwara 31; Ernest Masuku 2/71, Keith Ndlovu 1/21, Admire Mupembe 1/23)

Amakhosi – 133 all out in 25 overs (Thabo Mboyi 28, Ashley Phiri 24, Mzingaye Mdlongwa 18; Patrick Nyamapfeni 5/24, Taru Munashe 3/32, Kudakwashe Munyede 1/5)

Rainbow won by 112 runs

Fine bowling from Taru Munashe (three wickets for 32) and Patrick Nyamapfeni (five for 24) saw Rainbow through to a convincing 112-run victory over Amakhosi in their NPL meeting at Kwekwe Sports Club on Thursday.

Rainbow, opting to bat, lost a wicket to Ernest Masuku with the first ball of the match, but after that turned in a consistent batting performance, the next seven batters all reaching double figures.

The top scorer was Lavert Masunda with a steady 45 off 76 balls, while the impetus was provided by Tino Chiwara (31 off 20), Muhammad Zaheer Tufail (30 off 23) and finally Daniel Jakiel (39 not out off 38).

The total reached 245 for eight wickets, and it soon looked a winning score when Amakhosi lost their first six wickets in reply for only 55 runs.

Munashe perhaps deserves the greatest credit, as he shot down the first three wickets for only five runs among them, and Nyamapfeni took advantage of this to take five more very cheaply.

Some resistance came later from Ashley Phiri (24) and Thabo Mboyi (28), enabling their team to finish with a total of 133.

************************************************************

Bulawayo Athletic Club – 242-8 in 45 overs (Tafara Mupariwa 134*, Gift Mavhaire 37, Kudakwashe Kaitano 19; Patrick Chinengundu 4/32, Donald Tiripano 1/47, Tatenda Mupunga 1/49)

Mutare Sports Club – 245-2 in 41.1 overs (Nigel Bonyongwe 107*, Clive Chitumba 89, Kudzai Sauramba 18; Thamsanqa Nunu 1/42, Prince Kaunda 1/51)

Mutare Sports Club won by eight wickets

Nigel Bonyongwe’s 107 not out for Mutare Sports Club eventually trumped Tafara Mupariwa’s 134 not out for Bulawayo Athletic Club, as the former clinched a fine run-chase by eight wickets in their NPL fixture at Masvingo Sports Club on Thursday.

Put in to bat, the BAC innings was largely a one-man show as, apart from 37 by the opening batter Gift Mavhaire, none of the other batters reached 20.

After Mavhaire went out at 86 for two, Mupariwa fought a lone battle, and did it magnificently, scoring his unbeaten 134 from 128 balls with 18 fours, the total being 242 for eight wickets.

Patrick Chinengundu was the best bowler, breaking through the middle order with four wickets for 32 runs, but he could not remove Mupariwa.

Mutare opened their innings with Clive Chitumba and Bonyongwe, and their partnership of exactly 200 in 35.2 overs virtually settled the match.

Chitumba, scoring slightly faster than Bonyongwe, made 89 off 98 balls, with four sixes and seven four wickets, while Bonyongwe hit 14 fours in making his 107 off 131 balls.

The eventual total was 245 for two wickets, and Mutare won by 23 balls in hand.

Westside won by four wickets

A good innings of 48 by Definate Mawadzi was a key factor in a closer NPL match played at Masvingo Sports Club where Westside beat Queens by four wickets on Wednesday.

Queens never recovered from a bad start, when they slumped to 58 for five wickets in the 18th over.

Tanatswa Bechani played a captain’s innings of 66 to rally his team, but they could total only 158, with Prosper Mugeri taking three wickets for 35 to be the most successful bowler.

Westside did not begin too confidently, but Mawadzi held the early batting together until he found a reliable partner in Kevin Kasuza, who scored 38.

Both were out, and six wickets were down for 140, but Tafadzwa Ngulube and Vincent Masekesa then took Westside home without further loss.

Kadoma won by 56 runs

Takudzwanashe Kaitano played a dashing innings of 70 for Kadoma that gave them the edge over Scorpions in their NPL match which they eventually won by 56 runs at Takashinga Sports Club on Wednesday.

Thanks mainly to Kaitano and Terrence Makoroma, who opened the innings with 37, Kadoma reached 109 before the third wicket fell, and there was a good fifth-wicket partnership of 76 between Nyasha Mayavo (41) and Davis Murwendo (36).

The final total was 249 all out, and Costa Zhou was the most successful bowler with three wickets for 36.

Scorpions began their chase very well, with Blessed Muzite (39) and Gabriel Jaya (37) making 66 for the first wicket, and with Zhou hitting 30 the score reached 106 before he was second out.

Unfortunately for Scorpions their middle-order wickets tumbled steadily and they fell behind the rate.

Kudakwashe Macheka (four for 57) and Murwendo (three for 20) were the bowlers responsible as Scorpions were bowled out for 193.

A five-wicket haul for only 27 runs by Takunda Manyama gave Uprising an exciting five-run victory over Queens in their National Premier League clash at Kwekwe Sports Club on Saturday.

The team was rescued by Gilford Muzeya (20) and Takunda Manyama (29) who added 38 for the eighth wicket.
